NSW: Fires under control as winds threaten flare-up
Firefighters are working to stay on top of bushfires across New South Wales as highertemperatures and stronger winds threaten to worsen the situation this afternoon.
Forecasts have predicted temperatures over 30 degrees and northerly winds.
Rural Fire Service spokesman ROSS WEST says the winds are likely to pick up after 2pm (AEST).
He says no properties have been threatened so far today with efforts concentrated onkeeping them away from settlements north-west of Sydney especially Brooklyn township.
The F3 freeway running through the area remains open but police advise motorists onlyto use it if essential because of a build-up in smoke.
Two roads in the Myall Lakes area north of Newcastle are closed because of backburningand the danger of falling trees.
They are Lakes Way between Violet Hill Road and Mayers Flat, and Bombah Point Roadbetween Buladelah and Bombah Point Ferry.
Mr WEST says there is some concern about fires in the Blue Mountains west of Sydneybut a fire in Sutherland south of Sydney has been contained.
