CHARLESTON, S.C. -- An Air Force fighter jet crashed in the Atlantic on Friday, killing the pilot.
The plane, an F-16CJ, crashed about 10:40 a.m. about 40 miles east of Charleston, said Senior Airman Lee Watts of Shaw Air Force Base.
The aircraft was in a military training area and the pilot was involved in an air combat training mission at the time, Watts said. He did not know whether other planes were training in the area.
The aircraft was assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw, which is in Sumter, about 90 miles northwest of Charleston.
Base spokesman Capt. Ron Watrus confirmed that the pilot was killed. The pilot's name was not immediately released.
