Fed: forest restructure - how it would be done

CANBERRA, Aug 10 AAP - The package of changes proposed for Tasmania's forest industry operations:



* Stop log exports of 125,000 cubic metres and process domestically.

* Recover about 20 per cent more useable timber that is currently wasted.

* High pruning of more hardwood plantations to increase sawlog supply.

* Re-tooling of sawmills to use lower quality plantation logs.

* Downstream processing of existing plantation wood.

* Expanded park and tourism infrastructure.
